Carlo Cristofori

Carlo Cristofori (born January 5, 1813 in Viterbo , † January 30, 1891 in Rome ) was an Italian lawyer and curia cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Carlo Cristofori, son of a noble family, studied civil and canon law in Viterbo and Rome. In 1838 he was appointed to the curia . There he worked first at the Roman Rota and then as a consultant at the Apostolic Signature before becoming a judge at the Tribunal of the Papal Household. Pope Pius IX appointed him archivist of the Holy See in 1874, which Cristofori remained until 1877.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him auditor of the Roman Rota in 1880 , in 1882 he was appointed Regens of the Apostolic Penitentiary . On April 18, 1885, he was appointed General Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber. In the consistory of July 27, 1885 Leo XIII took him. as Cardinal Deacon of Santo Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia to the College of Cardinals . He was ordained deacon on December 6th of the same year. To this day, Cristofori is the last cardinal who was not ordained at the time of his creation.

On March 14, 1889, Leo XIII appointed Cardinal Cristofori as Prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics . He held this office until his death in January 1891.
