Carlo Tessarini (* around 1690 in Rimini , † after December 15, 1766 in Amsterdam ) was an Italian violinist and composer of the late Baroque.

Life

Carlo Tessarini came from a family of sailors. Little is known about his childhood and his studies, some sources suggest that he received his musical training in the Venetian environment, possibly as a student of Antonio Vivaldi . Carlo Tessarini was first mentioned as a violinist at St. Mark's Basilica . Until 1731 he was music director ("maestro dei concerti") of the "Ospedale del Derelitti", one of the four orphanages in Venice ; Here he composed his Concerto à cinque op. 1. In 1731 he got a job in the “capella musicale” of the Urbino cathedral , which he held until 1743, although from 1730 to 1737 he was Kapellmeister of Cardinal Schrattenbach in Brno. In 1740 Tessarini took over the direction of a theater orchestra in Rome, which he after the death of Pope Clement XII. had to give up.

After 1747 Tessarini stayed in Rome and Naples, later in countries north of the Alps. His concert tours have taken him to Paris, Brussels, Nijmegen, Groningen and Frankfurt am Main. From 1766 his traces are lost in Arnhem. Carlo Tessarini was not only a well-known violinist in large parts of Europe, but also a celebrated composer, as numerous press articles from his time show. He wrote melodramas, sonatas for violin, concertos for one or more instruments and symphonies.

Tessarini began to publish his compositions relatively late, which is why some things cannot be assigned to him without a doubt. His later works clearly show a turn to the gallant style . As a music theorist, he published important instructions on rhythms , the teaching of ornamentation , the execution of cadences and learning to play the violin.
