Carlo Van Neste (born April 1, 1914 in Antwerp , † July 12, 1992 in Brussels ) was a Belgian violinist.

Life

Carlo Van Neste spent the first years of his life because of the First World War in the Netherlands, where at the age of three he gave public concerts with his sister Rosanne, born in 1911, and other family members. In 1924 he received the Premier Prix at the Antwerp Conservatory with great honors. In 1925 he was introduced to Eugène Ysaÿe , to whom he played works by Henri Vieuxtemps and Henryk Wieniawski in a villa in the seaside resort of Knokke-Heist , whereupon Ysaÿe agreed to train Van Neste. A year later, at the age of twelve, he made his debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra , which marked the beginning of his international career. After concert tours through England, France, the Netherlands and Belgium, he was introduced to the art salon of the painter Marcel Hastir . At the Royal Conservatory in Brussels he received the first prizes in harmony, fugue theory and counterpoint in quick succession. In 1933 he won first prize at the Vieuxtemps competition in Verviers , and in 1934 the Fritz Kreisler Prize of the city of Liège . From 1937 he completed his skills with Jacques Thibaud at the École Normale de Musique de Paris . Between 1937 and 1942 he had private lessons with George Enescu .

In 1942 he received a professorship at the Brussels Conservatory and at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth , and later also at the Conservatory in Utrecht . Edith Volkaert and Véronique Bogaerts , who were both finalists in the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth , were among his most famous students . Out of friendship and gratitude, Queen Elisabeth Van Neste bought a violin attributed to Pietro Guarneri II, which has since been nicknamed Ex Reine Elisabeth .

In addition to his teaching and solo activities, Van Neste played in Tio Van Neste , founded in 1964 and later renamed Trio Reine Elisabeth , other members were the pianist Naum Slusny and the cellist and composer Eric Feldbusch (1922–2007). Concert tours have taken Van Neste to the major concert halls in Europe, Japan, and North and South America.

Non-profit Van Neste Foundation

After his death, a foundation was set up under the chairmanship of his daughter Dominique Van Neste, one of whose goals is to provide young talents with first-class musical instruments, such as the young violinist Lorenzo Gatto . Furthermore, the Trio Van Neste , which was founded in 2005 and consists of young musicians, is supported.

In addition to the music-related activities, the foundation supports a development project in Burundi (in the province of Muramvya ), so a primary school for 550 children with a school canteen and sports fields has been built there, a literacy program for adults, a drinking water supply, and ongoing training for the teachers is also included guaranteed.
