Carlos Fariñas

Carlos Fariñas Cantero (born November 28, 1934 in Cienfuegos , † 2002 in Havana ) was a Cuban composer.

Fariñas was a student of Harold Gramatges , Serafín Pró , Edgardo Martín , Argeliers León , Enrique González Mántici and José Ardévol . In 1956 he studied in Tanglewood with Aaron Copland , from 1961 to 1963 at the Moscow Conservatory with Alexander Ivanovich Pirumow and Dmitri Kabalewski .

Since the 1960s he turned to electronic music. In 1972 he composed diálogos for tape together with Sergio Barroso . In 1975 the Cuban National Ballet commissioned the composition Yagruma for orchestra, eleven percussionists and electroacoustic instruments. This was followed by works for tape, multimedia compositions and, most recently, pieces for computer-generated electroacoustic music, as well as a cello and guitar concert.

Since 1963 Fariñas has taught composition at the Conservatorio Alejandro García Caturla . From 1967 to 1977 he headed the music department of the Biblioteca Nacional and in this capacity organized courses, conferences and concerts in which he made the works of Xenakis , Nono , Cage , Ferrari , Maderna and Stockhausen known in Cuba. In 1978 he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Music at the Instituto Superior de Arte . In 1989 he was one of the founders of the Estudio de Música Electrónica y por Computación .
