The Varresbeck is a 3.2 kilometer long stream in the Elberfeld-West district of Wuppertal . The brook, which is a tributary of the Wupper , is also the namesake for the Varresbeck residential area . The Varresbecker Bach tautology is often used for the name of the flowing water ( Beck is the Low German word for Bach).

topography

The stream rises in a residential area at a height of 237 m directly on the watershed to the river system of the Düssel . The first stretch of the brook runs underground, piped up, and initially heads south along the In der Beek road , where the water comes out again. The Varresbeck has formed a small valley in the slate here, which the road follows. The place name In der Beek ( Beek is the Low German term for "Bach") is said to have been mentioned for the first time in the 14th century. In the further course the brook comes to a rain clarification and retention basin, which was built in 1987. This facility was renovated in 2000. After this structure, the brook runs underground again to the mouth. At the end of the street In der Beek it turns to the south-west and runs parallel to the federal motorway 46 (A 46), west around the Nützenberg . The stream continues underground parallel to Talstrasse and then continues south under Varresbecker Strasse as a section of Bundesstrasse 7 , finally flowing into the Wupper near the Varresbeck suspension railway station at a height of around 139 m.

Owl Head Path

The area of the brook In der Beek is part of the hiking trail Eulenkopfweg , which, in addition to the brook, also includes the industrial monument of the lime funnel kiln on Eskesberg and a renatured waste dump located in the former quarry.

Manor Varresbeck

When the construction of the A 46 was planned in the late 1960s, it became necessary to think about the Varresbeck manor . This manor house on the edge of Nützenberger Strasse , which was first mentioned in a document in 1402, had to give way to the widening of the street. The almost dilapidated building was dismantled from 1972 and is now rebuilt in the Gut Hungenbach open-air museum in Kürten . A hotel was later built on the site.

Soil pollution in the valley road

In the valley road in 1991 were significant in analyzes loads of soil found that originated in early industrial era at the beginning of colonization in the 19th century. The residues of the slag and industrial waste made it necessary that the upper soil layer of the gardens had to be removed and replaced with new mother earth. A playground was completely sealed with asphalt. The renovation was completed in 1998.
