life and work

Carlos Garaicoa grew up in La Habana Vieja , he first studied thermodynamics and worked as a draftsman during his military service . Garaicoa attended the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana from 1989 to 1994 . Garaicoa has been working with the media of photography, performance, drawing, sculpture, installation, text and video since the early 1990s.

At the center of his work are the subjects of architecture and urban planning as a mirror of political realities and social developments. Garaicoa sees architecture as "a discipline that plays one of the most important roles in society and that politically, ideologically and socially reflects all changes and events that determine the course of our lives."

In his hometown Havana and in international projects, he follows the changes in urban space.

“Garacoia's project for Documenta11 draws the attention of the present to everything that has remained unfinished in the past. Continuidad de una Arquitectura Ajena (Continuity of a Freestanding Architecture (2002) exposes unfinished architectural projects in Cuba, digitally reconstructs them and transforms them into real models of visionary architectural landscapes. By bringing the projects to a close, Garaicoa allows the wounds of history to heal. "
