Carlos "Café" Alberto Escobar Martínez (born August 11, 1965 in La Guaira , Vargas , † January 24, 2006 ibid) was a Venezuelan baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) on the position of first and third baseman . His son José also plays in the MLB.

biography

Carlos Martínez began his career in his hometown of La Guaria at the age of 18. In the same year he was hired by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent . In 1986 the Yankees sold him to the Chicago White Sox , and Ron Kittle joined the Yankees for him . For the White Sox he made his major league debut on September 2, 1988. Martínez was a right-handed batsman who played primarily as first and third baseman. After the 1990 season, he left the White Sox for the Cleveland Indians . The 1989 season was the most successful for him.

His last position in the MLB was the California Angels . From there he returned to Venezuela, where he had to end his career, which was accompanied by many injuries, after the 1998 season. He died in his home country at the age of 40 after a serious illness.
