Carlos Posada Amador

Carlos Posada Amador (born April 25, 1908 in Medellín , Antioquia , Colombia , † December 21, 1993 in Mexico ) was a Colombian composer , music teacher and university teacher .

Life

He received violin and piano lessons from his parents Lisandro Posada and Alicia Amador at an early age . He later studied these instruments with the Spanish violinist Pedro Begue, who lives in Medellín, and his uncle, the pianist Germán Posada.

He and his family moved to Paris in 1927 , where he studied conducting at the Schola Cantorum directed by Vincent d'Indy . He also studied counterpoint and music history as well as music education with Georges Dandelot at the École Normale de Musique de Paris with Nadia Boulanger . After completing his studies, he became professor of counterpoint in 1933 .

After his return to Colombia, he was appointed director of the music school ( Escuela de Música ) of the Institute of Fine Arts ( Instituto de Bellas Artes ) of Medellín in 1935 and held this position until 1935. As such, he organized the Second National Music Congress in Medellín. Roberto Pineda Duque was one of his students .

He was also active as a composer and dealt with the interpretation and contemporary implementation of medieval chants in the cycle Cinco canciones medioevales .

In 1942 he settled in Mexico and was there until 1950 both professor at the music school of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and at the Conservatory of Music in Mexico City . After giving up this teaching activity, he worked as a composer until his death and created mainly musical works for voice and piano as well as for orchestra.
