Carlos Ramos
Carlos Augusto da Silva Ramos (born October 10, 1907 in Lisbon ; † November 9, 1969 there ) was a Fado singer and a guitarist on the Portuguese guitar .
Career
As a teenager he saw guitarists playing in the bars of Alcântara and learned to play the instrument. Later he visited Fado bars, where he a. a. Armandinho (1891-1946) played. He accompanied Fado singers such as Alfredo Marceneiro and Hermínia Silva on the Portuguese guitar before singing in public for the first time in 1930, with his own accompaniment. In 1939 he played abroad for the first time, accompanying Portuguese singers at the international fair in New York. His career as a fado singer began in March 1944 when he was signed to Café Luso , the most important fado bar at the time. He accompanied himself on the Portuguese guitar, also in his subsequent engagements in other Fado houses, a. a. the O Faia . He has also appeared in various films as a guitarist, including a. in Fado ( Perdigão Queiroga , 1947) and O Fado Corrido ( Jorge Brum do Canto , 1964). In 1953 he moved to Brazil for some engagements , including a. in the Rádio Nacional do Rio de Janeiro . In 1958 he went on tour through Africa and the Mediterranean region at the invitation of the state shipping company ( Companhia Nacional de Navegação ), together with Tony de Matos . In the same year he became the owner of a restaurant in which singers such as Alfredo Marceneiro, Maria Teresa de Noronha and others. a. occurred.
After numerous appearances on the radio ( Emissora Nacional and Rádio Clube Português ) and in the television program Melodias de Semper (English: roughly "Evergreens") of the RTP , his popularity grew strongly. His fados were partly classics and partly new pieces by other composers based on them. The songs he wrote himself emphasized the themes of the Saudade , past times, old traditions and typical everyday scenes of the old quarters of his hometown, which were already predominant in his repertoire . His career ended abruptly after a thrombosis in the mid-1960s. Carlos Ramos died in 1969.
