Carlos Simón Vázquez

Carlos Simón Vázquez (born June 2, 1965 in Cáceres , Spain ) is a Spanish Roman Catholic clergyman , theologian and bioethicist . Since 2017 he has been a board member of the Pontifical Academy for Life .

Life

Carlos Simón Vázquez studied medicine and surgery at the University of Navarra . He then completed a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome . In 1995 he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Coria-Cáceres through Bishop Ciriaco Benavente Mateos . He worked in pastoral care in Cañaveral (Spain) in the province of Cáceres . At the same time he was professor of moral theology at the Instituto Teológico “San Pedro de Alcántara” (ITPA) in Coria, western Spain, and at the Institute for Religious Studies of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Instituto de Ciencias Religiosas Nuestra Señora) in Estremadura . He was also visiting professor in the master’s program in bioethics at the Sociedad Andaluza in Córdoba and at the Facultad de Teología del Norte de España in Burgos . Simón Vázquez is the author of various books on bioethics and the coordinator of the first Spanish dictionary of bioethics.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on February 9, 2008 as Undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family .

With the dissolution of the Pontifical Council for the Family on September 1, 2016, he was appointed head of the Department for Family and Life in the new Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life . On August 5, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him a board member of the Pontifical Academy for Life .
