Carmel "Carm" Lino Spiteri (born September 9, 1932 in Valletta ; † February 9, 2008 ) was a Maltese politician of the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) who was a member of the House of Representatives of Malta between 1971 and 1987 and again from 1992 to 1996 .

Life

Spiteri, whose nickname was "Ċumpaqq", completed a degree in architecture at the Royal University of Malta after attending the high school , which he graduated in 1955. As an architect, he was involved in the design of Malta Airport , which opened on March 31, 1958. In addition, he was involved in numerous building projects as an architect or building consultant.

Spiteri was non-party until 1970 and was then asked by both the Partit Laburista and the Partit Nazzjonalista to run in the 1971 elections. He decided to run for the Partit Nazzjonalista and was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives in the elections on June 14, 1971. Spiteri was a member of this until May 9, 1987, when he lost his mandate in these elections. During this time he was a critic of Lorry Sant , who in the governments of the Partit Laburista of Prime Minister Dom Mintoff was first Minister for Public Works and later for Home Affairs and Sport.

In the elections that followed on February 22, 1992, he was re-elected as a member of the House of Representatives and represented the interests of the PN until he was defeated again in the elections on October 26, 1996. During this time he also served as Parliamentary Secretary ( Whip ) of the PN group . For many years he was committed to the small town of Mellieħa and in 1996 was awarded the medal to commemorate the 75th anniversary of self-government in Malta ( Midalja kommemorattiva fl-okkazzjoni tal-75 anniversarju mill-introduzzjoni tas-Self Government f'Malta ).
