Lino Spiteri

Lino Carmel Paul Spiteri (born September 21, 1938 in Qormi ; † November 14, 2014 ) was a Maltese journalist , bank manager and politician of the Partit Laburista (PL), who was a member of the House of Representatives between 1962 and 1966 and 1981 to 1998 and was a minister several times was.

Life

After attending the Lyceum and Plater College, Spiteri completed a degree in social sciences , which he completed with a diploma. He then worked again as a research scientist at the Chamber of Commerce and as an employee of the Central Bank ( Bank Ċentrali ta 'Malta ). On January 26, 1974 Spiteri became deputy governor of the central bank and held this office until November 22, 1981.

In the elections of December 12, 1981, Spiteri was again elected a member of the House of Representatives, to which he was now until September 5, 1998. On December 20, 1981 he was appointed by Prime Minister Dom Mintoff as Minister of Finance ( Ministru tal-Finanzi ) in his fourth cabinet and held this office until September 3, 1983. Prime Minister Alfred Sant reappointed him as Finance Minister in his cabinet on October 28, 1996 . However, only six months later, on March 26, 1997, Spiteri resigned due to disagreements over the government's tax policy.

In addition to his professional and political career, Spiteri also wrote short stories such as Anatomija - short stories and Il-Halliel u stejjer ohra , for which he was awarded the National Book Prize ( Premju Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb ) in 2005. For his many years of service, he was also named Companion of the National Order of Merit on December 13, 2008 . After his death he was buried on the Cimiterju tal-Addolorata .
