Carmen Staaf

Carmen Staaf (born February 9, 1981 ) is an American jazz pianist and accordionist .

Life

Staaf grew up in Seattle , took classical piano lessons and salsa lessons in Cuba before going to college. She then studied anthropology at Tufts University and music at the New England Conservatory of Music with Danilo Pérez until 2005 , after which she taught at Berklee College of Music until 2009 . As an accordionist she performed with Lila Downs and the formation Klezmatics , as a pianist she played in a duo with bassist Henry Grimes . She has also worked with Eddie Gomez , Bob Brookmeyer , Bob Moses and George Garzone . In 2008 she presented her debut album Reflection ; In 2009 she won the Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition , her album Eye to Eye was released in 2010, and Day Dream in 2017 . In 2018 she was a member of Darren Johnston's Wind Over Walls .
