Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto (born February 25, 1963 in San Juan ) is a Puerto Rican politician and mayor of San Juan since 2013.

Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto grew up in the Río Piedras district of San Juan. After high school, she earned a bachelor's degree from Boston University and then attended Carnegie Mellon University , where she completed a master's degree in public policy with a focus on management and human resources .

Professionally, she worked in the human resources departments of private companies such as Colgate-Palmolive , Banco Popular de Puerto Rico and Scotiabank , as well as the US Treasury Department . In 1992 she returned to Puerto Rico and worked for the then mayor of San Juan Sila María Calderón . In 2001 she became an employee of the then President of the House of Representatives Carlos Vizcarrondo.

Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto is a member of the Partido Popular Democrático and was involved in the party for political education and in the women's organization of the Organización de las Mujeres Populares party .

In 2008 she was elected to the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico and was a member of the House of Representatives from January 1, 2009 to January 2, 2013. In 2012, she ran successfully for the mayoral office of San Juan, and in 2016 she was re-elected.

She gained international fame when, after the devastating Hurricane Maria 2017 , she criticized the inadequate and too slow aid from the Trump cabinet in the media.

Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto announced that she would run for governor of Puerto Rico in 2020 . However, she was defeated in the Partido Popular Democrático's area code in August 2020 against the mayor of Isabela Carlos Delgado Altieri.
