Carmichaelia is a genus of plants in the subfamily of the butterflies (Faboideae). This genus consists of shrubs that are reminiscent of the European gorse in growth. However, it occurs only in New Zealand , with the exception of one species, and its flowers are mostly reddish. The genus was named after the Scot Dugald Carmichael .

description

These are shrubs , small trees or half-shrubs , rarely, to woody vines. Depending on the species, they reach heights of between a few centimeters and a few meters.

The leaves are reduced in most species and only formed as small scales. Instead of the leaves, the stems take over photosynthesis . These are rush-like round or leaf-like flattened as phyllocladia .

The flowers are in simple or branched racemose inflorescences , with some species also individually. The zygomorphic flowers are five-fold. The five sepals are fused bell-shaped. The crown is whitish to pink, purple or purple, only rarely yellow. The pen stops on the sleeve after flowering as a beak.

Occurrence

The species of the genus are native to New Zealand only . A single one ( Carmichaelia exsul ) comes from Lord Howe Island , which belongs to Australia . Many species only occur very regionally.

Quite different locations are settled. Most species, however, occur mainly on poor, often stony soils with little vegetation.

Systematics

Both the demarcation between the individual species and the demarcation to closely related genera is very difficult and was handled very differently. Repeated revisions of the genus by Peter Brian Heenan showed that the previously used genres Chordospartium , Corallospartium , Notospartium and Huttonella in the genre Carmichaelia must be incorporated so that it is within the tribe except Carmichaelia depending considers only the genus Streblorrhiza or class Montigena gives.

Depending on the opinion, about 20 to 30 types are distinguished. However, there are a considerable number of synonyms , which is why lists of species often bear little resemblance to one another. The following list of species is based on the "Flora of New Zealand":
