View from the Fogou

In Carn Euny, traces of human activities from the early Neolithic could be found. The first settlement with wooden huts took place around 200 BC. In the first century BC These were replaced by stone huts, the remains of which are still visible. The people of Carn Euny made a living from agriculture , livestock farming , trade and perhaps also tin mining during this period . The most important structure of the excavation site is undoubtedly the Fogou ( Cornish for cave ), an artificially created underground passage covered with massive stone slabs. Its purpose is unclear. Carn Euny's Fogou is particularly well preserved and consists of a corridor over 20 m long, a side corridor that leads to a round stone-lined chamber, the ceiling of which has collapsed, and a small tunnel that may represent a second entrance. There were also houses with converted courtyards.

Research history

Etching by John Thomas Blight 1868

The plant was discovered in the early 19th century while searching for tin deposits. Between 1863 and 1868 the prehistorian William Copeland Borlase examined the site archaeologically and had the Fogou exposed. The graphic artist John Thomas Blight made appropriate etchings for the excavation report. During the 1920s, Dr. Favell and Canon Taylor first created the foundations of houses with courtyards. Extensive excavations were carried out between 1964 and 1972, during which nine foundations were discovered. The Fogou and the round chamber have been examined and restored. Four major settlement phases between the 5th century BC BC and the 4th century AD could be detected.
