from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carola Czempik (* 1958 in Hildesheim ) is a German visual artist and winner of the Brandenburg Art Prize for Painting (2018). She works in the areas of painting, drawing, object, installation, performance and interdisciplinary interaction with contemporary (music) composition.

Life

Carola Czempik studied theater and film studies as well as German at the Free University of Berlin (1976–1983) and graduated with a Magister Artium . At the same time, from 1976 to 1978 she studied “ Mime Corporel ” with Luise Anger and modern dance with various guest dancers at the University of the Arts (formerly HDK). This was followed by free dance theater work in Berlin and Imperia, Italy. At the same time, between 1987 and 1994, she studied painting with Karl-Heinz Herrfurth and sculpture with Frank Dornseif and Yoshimi Hashimoto at the University of the Arts before completing a master's degree in painting. From this knowledge and experience she developed a preference for performative artistic actions with drawing, rhythm, sound and text. Long-term interdisciplinary collaboration with female musicians and the resulting notations and drawings form an integral part of their work within concerts and performances. Czempik has been a lecturer at the EigenArt art academy in Bad Heilbrunn and at the Free Art Academy Gerlingen since 2013 .

Carola Czempik prefers to work in large-format series. Within her work process, she uses a rock flour technique she has developed. In a process-oriented way, it layers ground basalt, granite, quartz, slate, alabaster, clay and salt in interaction with colored pigments, water and special binders. It creates new molecular connections that alienate the material from its origin. Salt plays a central role in your work materials. Carola Czempik has developed a specific crystallization technique in order to investigate its painterly quality as well as the different transformations in interaction with other materials.
