The Carolina was the first steamship on the Danube and also the first steamship to be built in Hungary, which at that time belonged to the Austrian Empire . It was named after Empress Karoline Auguste of Bavaria , the fourth wife of Emperor Franz I.

history

In 1813 the Austrian government called for steamboats to be used on the Danube. Since this was unsuccessful, she repeated this call in 1817. Antal Bernhard (also Anton Bernhard) from Pécs built the tug Carolina and on March 21, 1817 towed a 488 t barge at 3.4 km / h upstream and at 17 km / h downstream. On May 2nd he demonstrated the steamship to the public in Vienna and on October 10th to the director of the Polytechnic Institute Johann Joseph von Prechtl and Johann Arzberger . On January 6th of the following year he received a 15-year privilege for steam navigation on the Danube.

On September 2, 1818, Antal Bernhard made a long-distance test from Vienna first to Bratislava , which took him three hours, and on to Budapest in a total of 24 hours. He now wanted to use the steamship to transport goods, but it failed. The goods could not be loaded directly onto the Carolina , as the steam engine took up almost the entire ship, and the engine power was insufficient to tow barges upstream.
