features

The reed warbler reaches a size of 15 centimeters. He has a long beak, which is shorter than in similar-looking Sprosserrohrsänger ( Acrocephalus luscinius ) of the Mariana Islands . The stripe above the eyes is bright yellow. The eye stripes are black. The top is brown. The rump is lighter and more yellowish. The wings of the hand, the wings of the arm and the tips of the control springs have thin yellowish hems. The underside is yellowish-white with a cinnamon-yellowish-brown tint. The iris is dark. The upper bill is black, the lower bill is light gray. The legs are gray. The sexes look the same. The juvenile birds are undescribed. The singing consists of a complex series of warble and trills, usually interrupted by short, irregular pauses. It doesn't last as long as the reed singer's song.

distribution and habitat

The reed warbler occurs on the islands of Woleai , Chuuk , Lamotrek , Pohnpei , Nukuoro and Kosrae . It inhabits high grass stands, gardens (also in cities), secondary forests and montane rainforests.

food

No data are available on his diet. It often searches for food on the ground and sneaks up on its prey. Occasionally he can be seen in the canopy of leaves.

Reproduction

Nests with eggs were discovered between April and October and the establishment of the nests was observed in December. The ball-like nest is a tightly interwoven structure of grass, stalks and leaves. It is lined with thin grass. The outer circumference is 8 to 11.7 centimeters, the nest height 4.7 to 8.8 centimeters, the inner circumference 4.3 to 6 centimeters and the shell depth 3.5 to 6 centimeters. The nest is often built 1.8 to 12 meters above the ground and especially above the water. The main nesting trees are corozo , coconut , mango and breadfruit trees. The clutch consists of two eggs. The breeding season and the nestling periods are undescribed.

status

The reed warbler is a common bird within its restricted range and is classified by the IUCN as "not endangered" ( least concern ). It breeds both on the high islands and on the small coral islands.
