Carolus Horn (* 1921 in Wiesbaden ; † December 1992 in Laubach , Hessen ) was a German commercial artist and copywriter .

The painter and designer was one of the few well-known artists who suffered from dementia in the course of their lives and who then continued to be creative.

Life

Carolus Horn worked as an advertising designer and devoted himself intensively to drawing and painting in his free time, "even in critical life situations" such as during his captivity in the Second World War .

Horn worked for decades with his artist colleague Hans Jung , with whom he carried out orders for the Adam Opel AG in the design of brochures and advertisements for the advertising agency McCann Erickson under the artist's signature JU-HO .

Some of his advertising slogans, such as “ Only flying is more beautiful ” for the Opel brand Opel GT from 1968, became idioms or became well known, such as “ Everyone talks about the weather. We are not. “For the Deutsche Bundesbahn .

Today, Horn's name is mainly associated with the traveling exhibition How Fried Eggs Are Made from Clouds , which uses its pictures to impressively and vividly document the course of Alzheimer's disease , from which Horn fell ill at the age of 60 and from which he died at the age of 71.

From 1984 until his death, Horn repeatedly painted the Rialto Bridge in Venice , which he had often painted and drawn even before he became ill. Although the typical, illness-related limitations in artistic expression were found, "but also the good opportunity to express emotions and personalities despite the illness."

In 2001 a monograph on the artist was published by the Maurer & Maurer publishing house in connection with the first exhibition of his oeuvre, the activities of the Alzheimergesellschaft Bonn e. V. and the company Novartis Pharma , which acquired the exhibited pictures and then organized numerous exhibitions in various institutions for a number of years.
