Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett (born September 16, 1973 in Santa Rosa, Barima-Waini region , Guyana ) is a politician from Guyana.

biography

After attending elementary school in Santa Rosa and a private school in Georgetown , she completed a degree in business administration at the University of Saskatchewan . After her return to Guyana in 1993, she completed a degree in social work at the University of Guyana , which she completed with a degree . Between 1993 and 2001 she was also the manager of the Amerindian Projects Program of the Social Impact Amelioration Program (APP-SIMAP), a program to promote social projects for the benefit of the indigenous people of the country.

In 2001 she was appointed Minister for Native American Affairs (Amerindian Affairs) by President Bharrat Jagdeo in the cabinet of Prime Minister Samuel A. Hinds . In this capacity, she also introduced a law to improve the rights of indigenous people (Amerindian Bill) in March 2006. After the election to the National Assembly in September 2006, she was confirmed in office as the first female minister by President Jagdeo.

As part of a cabinet reshuffle, she was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs on April 10, 2008, making her the first female foreign minister in her home country. The previous Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Trade, Pauline Campbell-Sukhai, was succeeded as Minister for Native American Affairs. As Foreign Minister, she sees a focus of the regional integration of Guyana in the Caribbean and the solution of problems within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) .
