Thank God Jochmann
Gottlob Jochmann (born March 11, 1799 in Ober-Neundorf ; † May 19, 1856 in Görlitz ) was Lord Mayor of Görlitz, succeeding his well-known predecessor Gottlob Ludwig Demiani .
biography
He came from a landowning family, his father was a village judge in Ober-Neundorf / Oberlausitz. Gottlob Jochmann attended elementary school in Ludwigsdorf and then the Görlitz high school. He studied law and political science and worked in practical work at the regional and city courts in Glogau and as a director at the regional and city courts in Liegnitz and Liebenthal . In 1824 he became a Freemason and resigned from the lodge in 1832 due to excessive work. As mayor of Liegnitz he enjoyed a good reputation. On July 3, 1847, the city council of Görlitz decided on Jochmann as the new mayor. After a year in office, the royal confirmation as Lord Mayor took place.
Jochmann was aware that economic development was tending towards a bourgeois social order. This was also made clear by the revolution of 1848 that broke out during his term in office . However, he primarily devoted himself to local political tasks:
- Construction of the viaduct over the Neißetal , which secured the railway connection to the east and thus made Görlitz a traffic junction; the Dresden – Görlitz - Breslau line was thus opened.
- He also had the existing monastery walls torn down, which had become a traffic obstacle in the street network in the center of the city.
- The construction of the grammar school , the construction of the city theater in 1851 and the state house in 1855 also fell into his tenure.
- In 1854 he introduced gas lighting in the city.
A lung disease ended his creative urge on May 19, 1856. He was buried in the Görlitz cemetery in the immediate vicinity of his predecessor Demiani with great sympathy from the citizens. His wife returned to her hometown Liegnitz in autumn 1858.
Honors
- He was a knight of the Red Eagle Order 3rd class with ribbon.
- One of the streets in Görlitz was named after him in 1886.
