Georg Wiesner

Georg Wiesner (born April 7, 1884 in Forst (Lausitz) ; † March 21, 1931 in Görlitz ) was the ninth Lord Mayor of the city of Görlitz.

Life

Wiesner was born in Forst in 1884 as the son of a rector. In Forst he also attended the community school and then the Realprogymnasium . He passed his Abitur at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Cottbus and then studied law and political science in Leipzig , Jena and Berlin . He did his legal clerkship in Spremberg , Cottbus and Berlin. In 1906 he received his doctorate in Erlangen . After completing his military service, he worked in the capital for legal support services and married the merchant's daughter Margarete Tannert. The marriage resulted in two sons.

Wiesner then worked as an assessor in Breslau . In 1913 he was appointed mayor of Hirschberg in the Giant Mountains . In 1917 he moved to the office of 1st mayor in Unna . Another ten years later, District President Dr. Pöschel on October 1, 1927 as Lord Mayor of the city of Görlitz. He was the successor of Georg Snay , under whom he had held the second mayor's office for some time. Wiesner's term of office saw the global economic crisis and its serious consequences for the urban population. During his tenure, the employment office on Gobbinstrasse and the Carolus hospital in Rauschwalde were opened. Furthermore, Wiesner had the historic city wall at the Peterskirche uncovered and acquired the Vogtshof for the city.

He was chairman of the youth hostel association and was involved in the construction of accommodation. Due to his musical and cultural interest, he joined the general committee for the 19th Silesian Music Festival in 1925 .

On March 21, 1931, at the age of only 47, he died of flu and otitis media. In the Christmas season of the previous year, he had given the funeral speech at the grave of his predecessor.

The Georg Wiesner Park in Görlitzer Ostvorstadt, today's Zgorzelec , was named after him.
