Carragozela , sometimes also Carragosela , is a locality and former municipality in Portugal .

history

Rock engravings prove a prehistoric settlement, before the arrival of the Romans . The present-day place was probably built after the Reconquista , as part of the settlement policy of the order of knights of Avis , to whom the lands had been assigned and who are said to have maintained a small monastery here. In addition, D. Urraca Fernandes, daughter of the first Portuguese king D. Afonso Henriques , is said to have owned property here, which is said to include a ruined house in today's place.

In the 14th century Carragozela became an independent municipality.

With the territorial reform in 2013, the municipality of Carragozela was dissolved and merged with Várzea de Meruge to form a new municipality.
