Várzea de Meruge is a locality and former municipality in Portugal .
history
A small fortified settlement of the Castro culture probably existed here when the Romans settled here. The place was probably repopulated after the medieval Reconquista , as part of the settlement policy of the order of knights of Avis , to which the land had fallen. The place was first listed in the royal surveys of 1258. It remained a parish in the Vila do Casal district until its dissolution in 1834. Since the Ervedal district was also dissolved in 1855 , Várzea de Meruge belongs to Seia.
With the territorial reform in 2013, the municipality of Várzea de Meruge was dissolved and merged with Carragozela to form a new municipality.

Várzea de Meruge was a municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Seia , in the district of Guarda . It had 249 inhabitants on an area of 6.1 km² (as of June 30, 2011).
It only consisted of the place of the same name.
In the course of the municipal reorganization of Portugal , Várzea de Meruge was merged with Carragozela on September 29, 2013 to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Carragozela e Várzea de Meruge .
The seat of the new municipality was Carragozela, while the municipal administration of Várzea de Meruge was retained as a citizens' office.
