Carstairs ( Scottish Gaelic Caisteal Tarrais ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area South Lanarkshire or in the traditional county of Lanarkshire . It is located about seven kilometers northeast of Lanark and 20 kilometers southwest of Livingston .

The place name is derived from "Castle of Tarras". While the name Casteltarras was still used in the 12th century, Castlestairs has been in use since the 16th century.

history

During the Roman occupation of Scotland, the Roman fort Castledykes was located near today's Carstairs . As a fiefdom, Carstairs was installed in 1765 as the Burgh of Barony . The Archbishops of Glasgow maintained a fortress at Carstairs, which, however, had already disappeared in the 18th century with the exception of the associated church. The mansion Carstairs House dates from the 19th century.

While 450 people lived in Carstairs in 1861, the number rose moderately to 528 in 1881. While the number of inhabitants fluctuated around 800 in the second half of the 20th century, in 2001 only 690 inhabitants were counted. In the 2011 census survey, 914 people lived in Carstairs.

traffic

The A70 ( Edinburgh - Ayr ) is the main thoroughfare from Carstairs and connects the town directly to the trunk road network. Within a few kilometers there is a connection to the A706 (Lanark - Bo'ness ), the A721 ( Kirkdean - Bellshill ) and the A743 (Lanark - Ravenstruther ).

The Carstairs station, east of Carstairs, was built by the Caledonian Railway . There the trains coming from London are separated on the West Coast Main Line with the destination stations Glasgow or Edinburgh . Also from Carlisle coming Caledonian Sleeper stops there. The independent village of Carstairs Junction was formed around the station .
