Johannes Carsten Hauch (born May 12, 1790 in Fredrikshald , Norway , † March 4, 1872 in Rome ) was a Danish poet and physicist .

Life

Hauch first studied law, then philosophy and natural sciences, became lecturer in physics at the Academy in Sorø in 1821 , traveled to Germany, Italy and France from 1821 to 1827 and in 1846 became professor of Nordic literature at the University of Kiel . When he was expelled from here by the outbreak of the revolution of 1848 , Queen Marie Sophie Friederike granted him refuge at Frederiksberg Castle near Copenhagen . He stayed there until he was appointed professor of aesthetics at the University of Copenhagen after Adam Oehlenschläger's death in 1851 . He taught there until his death.

Oehlenschläger's pupil developed an unusual talent in his first dramatic attempts at Contrasterne (1816) and Rosaura (1817). His subsequent tragedies were characterized by a study of character and lively coloring.

The epic-dramatic poem Hamadryaden: Et episk og dramatisk Digt (Copenhagen 1830) earned him the recognition of the romantics, namely from Ludwig Tieck . The works mentioned show him, like his poetry Digte (Copenhagen 1842, 2nd ed. 1854), to be recognized as an important Danish poet. They were later followed by Lyriske Digte og Romancer (1862), including the romance cycle Valdemar Atterdag, which is characterized by a rare rhythmic echo and lively freshness, and Nye Digtninger (1869). What characterizes Hauch is an unusual depth of feeling and enthusiasm, which draws him so strongly to the foreboding and mystical that a deep, romantic twilight hangs over all of his poems. Her strength is her character drawing and her wealth of images.
