The Cascade Glacier is a glacier in the US state of Alaska . It is located in the Chugach National Forest 90 km east of Anchorage .
geography
The 6.3 km long Cascade Glacier has its nutrient area at 1900 m altitude east of Mount Gilbert in the southwest Chugach Mountains . From there it flows in a southerly direction and ends on the north-west bank of Barry Arm , a side bay of Prince William Sound . The glacier covers an area of about 9.5 km² and has an average width of 1.5 km.
Glacier development
The Cascade Glacier is on the decline. The glacier tongue has withdrawn around 650 m from the bay in the last few decades. In the middle of the 20th century, the Cascade Glacier formed a common ice front with the Barry Glacier further east , which has also retreated significantly in recent years.
Naming
The glacier was named in 1899 by members of the Harriman-Alaska Expedition . The name refers to the narrow and steep glacier tongue of the Cascade Glacier, which is reminiscent of a step-like waterfall .
