Jerome I. Case founded the company in 1842 and has been manufacturing construction machinery since 1869. In 1977 Case got involved in the French excavator manufacturer Poclain with a 40 percent stake and took it over completely in 1988.

In 1999, Fiat took over Case and merged this company with the recently acquired supplier New Holland to "Case New Holland", or CNH Global for short .

The sister brand for agricultural machinery has been Case IH since 1985 .
