Castel Toblino

The Castel Toblino is a castle on a peninsula of the Lago di Toblino at the end of the Valle dei Laghi . It is located about 15 kilometers west of Trento .

history

The complex, built in the 12th century, was a fief of the Lords of Toblino, passed into the possession of the Lords of Campo Castle in the 13th century, came into the possession of the Church of Trento in 1495 and later belonged to the Madruzzo family . It probably originally stood on a small island in Lake Toblino. When the water level sank, it became a peninsula.

The construction may have emerged from an ancient temple. A memorial stone walled into the arcade indicates that the gods of fate from the Tublinates tribe were worshiped here in the 3rd century AD . At the foot of the castle there are traces of Roman buildings and the complex itself shows Roman-Rhaetian defense structures. The castle still contains medieval building elements such as the masonry in the west and the approximately 20-meter-high tower in the northwest. Around 1527 the Castel was renovated under Cardinal Bernardo Clesio and received a renaissance facade .

Later renovations took place under Gian Gaudenzio Madruzzo in the second half of the 16th century and towards the end of the 17th century under the von Wolkenstein family. The loggia, the portico and the round arches of the complex date from Gaudenzio's time. He was the brother of Carlo Gaudenzio Madruzzo , third Prince-Bishop of Trento from the House of Madruzzo.

In April 1848 Italian besieged volunteer corps during the First Italian War of Independence during the March on Trent Castle, about 400 Austrian soldiers had retreated into. A counter-attack presented by Thomas Friedrich von Zobel was able to provide a replacement a few days later. 21 men, including Austrian defectors, were taken prisoner and then shot dead in Trento.

The Castel Toblino is now used as a restaurant and is not regularly accessible.

Others

It is mentioned in poems by Ada Negri and Antonio Fogazzaro and it is the subject of various romantic legends. On full moon nights, two former residents of the castle who drowned in the lake are said to float as ghosts above the lake.
