The Castello di Suzey is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle above the Ivéry district of the municipality of Pont-Saint-Martin in the Aosta Valley . It is located on the municipality border with Perloz .

The castle ruins are located on a flat rocky ridge above the settlement below a rocky promontory popular with hikers, which is part of the Stagno di Holey nature reserve because of its remarkable floristic importance .

history

Although the castle seems to have been built earlier, it was not regularly mentioned in documents until the 14th century in the feudal records of the powerful noble Vallaise family , who owned various possessions and castles in the Lystal and the lower valley of the Dora Baltea , including in Perloz, Lillianes Fontainemore , This castle was found in the periphery of the jurisdiction of the Barons Vallaise : in parts of Pont-Saint-Martin and Arnad . It is said that in 1351 Domenico and Gottofredo di Vallaise robbed, kidnapped and imprisoned a wealthy merchant from Ivrea , Pietro di Stria , then demanded a ransom from his family and thus got away with impunity.

description

Floor plan and west facade of the Castello di Suzey, drawn by Carlo Nigra after a sketch by Alfredo d'Andrade

The castle, which is now completely in ruins, is of the type of the simple castles of the Aosta Valley and is characterized by a tower - today destroyed - which, according to recent studies, was round, had a diameter of 5 meters and dates from the 12th or 13th centuries. Century. Carlo Nigra , who carried out his research there in the 1940s, however, recognized:

“(...) della torre non si possono conoscere le esatte dimensioni poiché essa è completamente rovinata ed i suoi ruderi ne coprono le fondamenta. Dallo studio di questi ruderi si può però arguire come essa avesse la porta voltata a tutto sesto e sopraelevata sul terreno circostante. “ ( Eng . : (...) one cannot see the exact dimensions of the tower because it is completely ruined and its ruins contains no foundations. From the examination of these ruins, however, one can see that it had an entrance door equipped with a round arch and raised in relation to the surrounding area.)

An arrow loop from the inside

The perimeter wall that enclosed the castle, now overgrown and collapsed by vegetation, had an irregular shape to better adapt to the terrain. The main residential building with 80 centimeter thick walls was attached to it on the north side.

The residential building, which is presumably a century younger than the surrounding wall and tower, had a gable roof with battlements above it, under which there were openings for the drainage of rainwater. On the first floor there was a single room with loopholes, while the single room on the first floor had a single and a double window. In the attic there was another room that was lit through two gable windows.

The windows and the entrance gate

The castle also had a wicket door , perhaps with a small drawbridge . There were square windows on the north and west facades; There was a main entrance with an archivolt made of ashlar and - a little higher than the entrance - another double window, the columns of which have now disappeared. A rectangular stone window has been preserved on the south side.
