Castets (grape variety)

Castets from Viala & Vermorel

Castets is an autochthonous red wine variety in the Gironde department in southwestern France .

Their origin has not been established beyond doubt. While one theory is that a seedling was found near the forest in the commune of Saint-Macaire , which was propagated and sold by a Mr. Nicouleau, another explanation is that the variety comes from a region near the Pyrenees . In any case, since the 1870s a traveler named Castets campaigned heavily for the cultivation of the variety and gave it its name.

The vigorous and high-yielding variety is quite resistant to downy mildew and hardly suffers from late frosts, as it sprouts very late. On the other hand, the quality of the wines is at best enough for a pleasing table wine and therefore could not prevail. It is used in small quantities in the Vin de Pays of Aveyron north of Gaillac . She is also in the Provence - appellation range admitted.
