The Castillo de Gibralfaro is the ruin of a castle on Castle Hill ( Jbel-Faro = "rock of the lighthouse") within the urban area of the Andalusian city of Malaga . Together with the Alcazaba, it is one of the most important historical sights of the Spanish provincial capital on the Costa del Sol .
history
The approx. 135 m high hill was already fortified in ancient times; the remains that have been preserved were taken from the Emir Abd ar-Rahman III, who lived in Cordoba . (r. 912–961) was transformed into a fortress, which was renovated in the first half of the 14th century by Yusuf I of Granada (r. 1333–1354) and expanded into a palace fortress. In 1487, the troops of the Catholic Kings Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragón conquered the castle after more than three months of siege.
architecture
The outer walls of the castle are - based on the ancient Roman model - built from alternating layers of unprocessed natural stone and brick ; some buildings inside the fortress walls consist only of bricks.
Attractions
From the castle walls you have a unique view over the port and the city of Málaga as well as the bullring . An exhibition of armor, swords and other historical objects is shown in the former powder tower of the fortress. Information boards are set up along the castle walls.
