description

The Niederungsburg is located in the Cinco Villas border region between Aragon and Navarra . The walls of the complex extend over a rectangular area of 38 meters on the south side and 30 meters on the west side. The high, uniformly erected walls are reminiscent of the construction of the Cistercians . The castle has seven rectangular towers with small twin windows and loopholes . Four larger towers stand at the corners of the complex, the north and east wall sides also have two smaller towers roughly in the middle. The main gate of the castle is flanked by the southwest corner tower and another, slightly smaller tower east of it and was thus well protected. The towers raise the curtain wall by a few meters and still have remains of battlements . At the height of the curtain wall, rows of beam holes have been preserved on the outside of the towers, they were probably used to support wooden hurdles . The curtain wall is built from limestone blocks of different sizes, smoothed on the outside, and earlier also had battlements, none of which have survived today. The main entrance led through a simple, arched gate into a small inner courtyard bent to the east and through another gate into the actual courtyard of the castle.

The interior of the castle was dominated by two residential buildings on the north and west side, and a chapel in the south-east corner . A cistern was built in the center of the courtyard, which was fed from the roof of the building.
