Castle Bromwich Hall is a Jacobean style country house in the village of Castle Bromwich in the northern part of the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull in England's West Midlands . English Heritage has listed the mansion as a Grade I Historic Building.

history

Castle Bromwich Hall was built between 1557 and 1585 by Sir Edward Devereux , House of Commons for Tamworth , Staffordshire . In 1657 the manor was bought by Sir John Bridgeman . He had the property expanded and restored in 1672 by adding a second floor and adding a large front terrace. The terrace extended 3 meters to the front from the main building. Above the broken, gray stone pillars of the terrace, two figures were let into niches, which were called Peace and Plenty (English: Peace and Abundance). Sir John's coat of arms and monogram was carved in stone above the entrance.

The Bridgemans were raised to Barons Bradford in 1792 and Earls of Bradford in 1851. A marriage brought Weston Park into their possession, after which Castle Bromwich Hall was often leased.

Furnishing

Castle Bromwich Hall is famous for having twelve windows (one for each apostle ) and four dormers above (one for each evangelist ). The garden entrance led through a vine that was always cut in a cross shape. The entrance hall and gallery were clad in dark oak and the dining room was made of pitch pine from the USA . The ceilings were decorated with paintings of fruits and shells. In 1810 a three-part tapestry made in Brussels was hung in the drawing room. One of the windows in the gallery bore the coat of arms of Sir Edward Devereux and his wife Katherine. There were many secret passages and hiding places. Built into the high garden wall, there was a cold-water outdoor pool from 1733. The garden maze with its 1.8 meter high holly hedges was an exact copy of the one at Hampton Court Palace . The north garden has double wrought iron gates that lead to the adjacent church garden.

family

Over the years, Castle Bromwich Hall has had many famous visitors including B. the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn , the Duke and Duchess of Teck , the Duke and Duchess of York , the Prince and Princess Christian, Queen Mary and William Gladstone .

The last family member to live at Castle Bromwich Hall until her death in 1936 was '' Lady Ida Bradford ''. She loved the country house and the village, held garden parties on the property and mingled with the village population.

During the Second World War the manor house served as a storage room. After the war, it was leased to the General Electric Company as an apprenticeship training center and then used as an office for a construction business, while the buildings on the estate were leased to other small firms.

In 2007 the property was sold to Theodore Alexander , a furniture designer and manufacturer, who wanted to renovate the country house and open his exhibition for Europe there in 2008. But in 2009 Castle Bromwich Hall was put up for sale again by broker Knight Frank for £ 5m. The property was then sold for £ 1.75m, extensively restored and opened as a hotel in October 2011.

Today Castle Bromwich Hall is usually only open to hotel guests. The surrounding gardens are one of the last examples of formal English gardens in the country and have been restored by the Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens Trust , established in 1985 and long-lease these gardens from the City of Birmingham . The gardens are a popular tourist attraction and are open to the public.

The conservation area Castle Bromwich is centered in the manor house.
