Notre-Dame du Bourg in the Provençal city ​​of Digne-les-Bains was the original bishopric of the diocese of Digne, founded in the 4th century . She is the patron saint of the Mother of God venerated Mary assumed and was called in 1840 Monument historique classified.

During excavations in the 1980s and 1990s, a Gallo-Roman cemetery from the 1st century was discovered on the site of the current church , which also included two larger mausoleums from the 3rd century. The first church was built in the late 4th and / or early 5th century. The present church was built between the 12th and 14th centuries, but it suffered severe damage during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598). In 1591 the bishopric was moved to the new Saint Jérôme cathedral . Restorations took place in the 19th century.

The single-nave church building, which closes flat in the east, is covered by a barrel vault stabilized in the 19th century ; the outer walls were raised for this purpose. The outer walls of the nave show large blind arcades , with the south wall being windowed. The west portal with its cladding with set columns shows Romanesque or Neo-Romanesque forms; the wheel window above belongs to the late Gothic period . Four geometric shapes (triangle, square, pentagon and hexagon) are embedded in the floor of the church, in which there are Greek and Latin letters (e.g. BERGER in the hexagon or AGNUS in the pentagon).

Furnishing

The furnishings include a largely unadorned baptismal font , a small tympanum with the Lamb of God and two censer-wielding angels, as well as several damaged frescoes .
