Catharina Amalia von Schlegel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Catharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel (* October 22, 1697 , † after 1768 ) was a German hymn poet.

Little is known about their life. There is evidence that she lived unmarried in Köthen in the Lutheran women's monastery , which still exists today and was founded in 1711 by Princess Gisela Agnes , widow of Prince Emanuel Lebrecht von Anhalt-Köthen . In 1726 she corresponded from here with August Hermann Francke ; In 1768 she was probably still alive.

She wrote a number of hymns in the spirit of early pietism that in the various collections of Cöthen'schen songs , the last completely in three parts in 1768 in Halle (Saale) appeared, and in the Wernigerodischen spiritual new collection of songs of Count Heinrich Ernst to Stolberg-Wernigerode were included. The greatest aftereffect initially had Faith , Wings of Faith and Sweet Lamb, give my souls .

However, through translation into English by Jane Borthwick, her song reached Silence, My Will! as Be still, my Soul under the melody Finlandia the most widespread. It is sung to this day and has been recorded many times on CDs (including by Libera , Isobel Cooper and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir ).
