Life

She was born Catherine Boswell in Hampstead, north London, to Jean (a painter) and Ronnie Boswell (a publisher). She studied English Linguistics and Literature at University College London . In 1960 she moved to Paris where she worked as a teacher and radio announcer. She later returned to London, where she did image research. Through a mutual friend, the Austrian painter Georg Eisler , she met the writer Erich Fried in Vienna at the end of 1963 . They met again in London, and Erich Fried wooed them. The marriage finally took place on August 10, 1965. Catherine Boswell Fried was 29 years old at the time, Erich Fried 15 years older. For Catherine this was the first marriage, for Fried it was the third. The three children Petra, Klaus and Tom came from the marriage.

Her house in Kilburn (north-west London) became a meeting place for the radical left. Many prominent political actors (such as Rudi Dutschke , Daniel Cohn-Bendit , Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Astrid Proll ) often turned up there unannounced and sometimes lived in the house for months.

She was active as an artist, mainly paintings, etchings , engravings and photographs. After Erich Fried's death in 1988, she pursued her artistic ambitions with increased commitment. She began studying sculpture at Central St. Martins College and graduated successfully at the age of 58. From then on, sculpture became her preferred means of expression. Her works from the various art directions in which she was active have been presented in exhibitions in London and Vienna .

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Erich Fried's death, Catherine Boswell Fried was involved in numerous commemorative events with a reading from her book about the years together in London, published in 2008.

She died in London on February 4, 2015.
