Catherine Kousmine (1989)

Catherine Kousmine (* 1904 in Hvalynsky in the Russian Empire ; † August 24, 1992 in Lutry ) was a Swiss doctor of Russian origin. She was a proponent of orthomolecular medicine and developed a cancer diet . Her particular research interests were cancer , multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis .

life and work

The Kousmine family emigrated to Switzerland in 1918 during the Russian Revolution . Catherine Kousmine attended secondary school in Lausanne and studied medicine after graduating from high school, graduating in 1928. She specialized in pediatrics and worked in Guido Fanconi's pediatric clinic in Zurich . Then she continued her training in Vienna . After her return to Switzerland, however, Kousmine worked as a general practitioner because the Austrian pediatric diploma was not recognized in Switzerland.

After two of her patients died from cancer, she devoted herself to cancer research. She set up a laboratory in her kitchen in which she carried out animal experiments with mice. In doing so, she came to the conclusion that food has an impact on tumors and that it is possible to cure cancer with the help of nutrition. In 1949 she published the healing success of a colon cancer patient who was considered incurable with the help of her dietary regulations. She was convinced that the Budwig cream , part of Johanna Budwig's oil-protein diet , played an important role in the fight against cancer.

In 1989, Catherine Kousmine received honorary citizenship from Lutry.

Kousmine Diet

The so-called Kousmine diet is controversial as a means of combating cancer and is only recommended by alternative medicine practitioners. In addition to the nutritional rules , the diet is based on intestinal hygiene , the acid-base balance , nutritional supplements with high-dose vitamins and trace elements as well as psychosocial care. This diet should not only be able to cure cancer, but also a. also chronic bronchitis , allergies , cardiovascular diseases, polyarthritis and multiple sclerosis.

The essential dietary principles include avoiding meat, meat products and white sugar , consuming unprocessed grains as well as large quantities of fruit and vegetables and generally alkaline foods . Regular enemas and laxatives are promoted as a means of "intestinal hygiene" . Kousmine assumed that many diseases can be traced back to an excessively high acid content in the body due to poor nutrition. Patients should regularly check the pH of the urine and take basic food supplements if it falls below a specified value .

criticism

  • Scientific medicine is based on the assumption that a healthy body can excrete excess acids without any problems and that persistent acidosis cannot occur.
  • The pH of the urine only indicates that acids are actually being excreted through the kidneys . It fluctuates during the day. It is not an indicator of excess acidity in the body; this can only be determined by a blood analysis.
  • There are no independent studies showing any influence of this diet on any disease.
  • The multiple sclerosis international federation explains: "There is no scientific justification that a certain diet method is effective in the treatment of MS".
