Catinella is the only genus of the only family Catinellaceae of the sac fungi , which alone form the order Catinellales .

features

Catinella species are an exception within the Dothideomycetes , as they form cushion- to disc-shaped apothecia . When ripe, the fruit layer becomes gelatinous and the spores are released in a slimy mass. The excipulum consists of cells from a textura subangularis (a parenchyma- like tissue) to textura globulosa (a tissue made up of spherical elements with spaces in between). The paraphyses are swollen at the top. The hoses are unified and unseptate .

Way of life

Catinella species live saprobically on tree trunks. It is believed that the release of the spores in a slimy mass is used for spreading by arthropods .

Systematics and taxonomy

The genus Catinella was described by Émile Boudier in 1907 . For a long time the taxonomic position was uncertain and was partly placed in the Dermateaceae family within the Helotiales . In 2017, Anusha Hasini Ekanayaka , Kevin David Hyde & AD Ariyawansa described the monotypical order Catinellales with the only family Catinellaceae and its only genus Catinella . They form an order with an uncertain position within the Dothideomycetes .

At the moment (as of May 2018) the following species belong to the genus:
