Camille Gira (born June 2, 1958 in Luxembourg ; † May 16, 2018 in Luxembourg-Oberstadt ) was a Luxembourg politician (déi gréng) . From December 4, 2013, until his death, he was State Secretary for Sustainable Development and the Environment in the Bettel-Schneider government .

Career

From 1977 to 1994 Camille Gira worked as an air traffic controller at Luxembourg-Findel Airport . In 1993 he became a member of the Luxembourg Greens after he had run for the first time in 1989 on the electoral list of the Ekologiste fir den Norden ("Greens for the North") for the national elections. In the national elections on June 12, 1994, he was a Green MP in the Chambre des Députés (Parliament) and was re-elected in subsequent elections.

From 1990 to 2013 he was mayor of the municipality of Biekerech , having been a lay judge there since 1982. From 2010 to 2013 he was president of the Luxembourg municipal syndicate De Réidener Kanton ("Der Redinger Kanton "). In December 2013 he renounced his mandates as mayor and member of parliament to become State Secretary for Sustainable Development and the Environment in the Bettel-Schneider government.

On May 16, 2018, Gira suffered a fatal heart attack during a speech in parliament on his draft for a new nature conservation law . He was succeeded as State Secretary by Claude Turmes .
