cdrkit is a spin-off from cdrtools , a popular program package for creating CDs and DVDs, brought about by the Debian project . Part of the package is wodim (for W rite O ptical Di sk M edia), which is a spin-off from cdrtools' cdrecord . Further components are icedax (InCrEdible Digital Audio EXtractor, in German: Incredible digital audio readout ) and genisoimage , a descendant of mkisofs with support for boot code for some additional architectures.

The aim of cdrkit is to make the functionality previously offered by the cdrtools available to the user as far as possible, so that existing frontends such as K3b can continue to be used directly. An important difference between the two software packages is the license , otherwise they are partially compatible . However, the cdrtools are being actively developed and, in contrast to cdrkit, can now write Blu-ray media, while the latter is essentially only being corrected. For new functionality such as Blu-Ray support, please refer to the dvd + rw-tools and the libburnia project. cdrkit is now only a temporary solution to these.

Emergence

cdrkit was created as a reaction to a license change from cdrtools to CDDL by its author Jörg Schilling. The Debian maintainers of the cdrtools package saw the compatibility with the GPL no longer being sufficient and based their assessment on statements by the Free Software Foundation .

According to Debian, the possibly contradicting or partially invalid licensing was judged to be unsuitable for further distribution in the context of the Debian distribution, which in the opinion of Debian made necessary.

The most popular Linux distributions, including Ubuntu , Red Hat , Fedora , openSUSE, and Mandriva , have followed Debian and replaced cdrtools with cdrkit.
