dvd + rw-tools is a burning program package for DVDs , Blu-rays and DVD-RAM . It is distributed as free software also in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).
The centerpiece is the growisofs program , which requires a backend to create ISO-9660 images - either mkisofs (from the cdrtools package) or genisoimage (from the cdrkit package). Growisofs uses the dd program internally .
Contrary to what the program name suggests, the program can handle both DVD + R (W) and DVD-R (W).
The graphical user interfaces for the growisofs console program include K3b , Brasero and the Nautilus cd-burner. Also k9copy and GnomeBaker use the dvd + rw-tools.
The project was initiated in 2002 by Andy Polyakov. It was gradually ported to numerous operating systems: OpenBSD / NetBSD (available from version 5.4), Solaris 2.x (from 5.6), FreeBSD (5.8), HP-UX 11 (5.14), IRIX 6.x (5.19), Windows (6.0) and finally macOS (7.0).
