Cees Flinterman

Cornelis "Cees" Flinterman (born November 3, 1940 in The Hague ) is a Dutch law scholar and former university professor.

Live and act

Flinterman studied law at the University of Leiden , where he received his master's degree in 1969. He followed this with postgraduate studies at the University of Virginia , where he obtained a Master of Laws in 1971 . After his return to the University of Leiden he worked there as a lecturer until 1978, interrupted only by a two-year visiting professor with research stay at the University of Ghana from 1974 to 1976. From 1979 to 1981 Flinterman worked in the Dutch Foreign Ministry . In 1981, Flinterman was given a thesis on the Act of State Doctrine , supervised by Tim Koopmansfrom the University of Leiden to Dr. iur. PhD. From 1982 Flinterman held a chair in international law and constitutional law at Maastricht University . From 1984 to 1986 he was Dean of the Maastricht Faculty of Law. In 1997 he headed a UNPO mission in Tibet. In 1998 he moved to the University of Utrecht to take a chair in international law, where he also became director of the Dutch Institute for Human Rights. In 2007 he retired. From 2003 to 2010 he was also a member of the UN Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Flinterman's research focuses on international law and the international protection of human rights, in particular the protection of minorities and disadvantaged population groups, especially in Africa.
