Celia Barquín Arozamena

Celia Barquín Arozamena (born July 6, 1996 in Puente San Miguel , Reocín , Spain ; † found dead on September 17, 2018 in Ames , Iowa , United States ) was a Spanish golfer . Her greatest achievement was winning the title at the European Amateur Championships in 2018.

Life

Celia Barquin Arozamena studied civil engineering at Iowa State University , where she was on the college's golf team. From 2011 she took part in international youth tournaments. In 2014 she was a member of the Spanish team at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, and took 12th place in the individual competition and 17th place in the team competition. Her first tournament victory was in 2017 at the Copa Match Play Comunidad Valenciana . 2018 was her most successful year. In April she won the Big 12 Conference in Dallas, Texas, and at the end of July, the European Amateur Championships in Senica, Slovakia, with a course record. She also qualified for the United States Women's Open Championship , but failed here on the cut . She was ranked 69th among women golfers in the United States by Golfweek magazine . These successes made her eligible to compete in the Women's British Open in 2019 . Her university named her “Sportswoman of the Year 2018”.

Police discovered her body on September 17, 2018 on a golf course in Ames. After initial investigations, which revealed stab wounds to the upper body, neck and head, the authorities assumed a homicide and arrested a suspect. The suspect, 22-year-old Collin Richards, pleaded guilty to the premeditated murder of Arozamena in June 2019. On August 23, 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
