The United States Women's Open Championship (also: US Women's Open Golf Championship) has been held since 1946 as one of thirteen national championships by the United States Golf Association (USGA).

Significance for the ladies tours

The US Women's Open Golf Championship is one of the four LPGA major tournaments , along with the LPGA Championship , the Women's British Open and the Kraft Nabisco Championship . It was recognized as the only major tournament by the LPGA , which was founded in 1950 . The other current major tournaments were added later.

In contrast to the men's counterpart ( PGA Tour ), the United States Women's Open Championship is not recognized as a major tournament worldwide. The Ladies European Tour does not recognize any of the three major tournaments held in the USA and the Japanese LPGA Tour has its own majors. Nevertheless, the LPGA Tour is more important in women's golf than the PGA Tour in men's golf.

In 2007, non-Americans were in the majority for the first time, and in 2008 the 19-year-old South Korean won Park In-bee and became the youngest ever winner. The youngest participant to qualify was Alexis Thompson in 2007, aged 12 years and four months.
