The Celle War Cemetery is a war cemetery in Celle and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) . Its design is similar to all of the CWGC war cemeteries, the provisions of which were laid down in 1917.

history

This military cemetery was assigned to the 64th British Military Hospital, which was stationed in Celle, as a hospital cemetery. In the final months of the Second World War, many members of the military who died from their wounds found their final resting place here. A total of 206 Commonwealth soldiers, three Poles and one person of unknown nationality are buried in the Celle War Cemetery .

layout

The central axis is formed by the Cross of Sacrifice , the so-called sacrificial cross with the crusader sword , and the Stone of Remembrance ( altar stone ) with the inscription "Their Name Liveth For Evermore". The white sand-lime stone tombstones are arranged in rows and at ground level, with mostly roses planted on the small beds . The tombstones bear the inscriptions about the unit , the name and rank , the religious affiliation (if known) and a reminder verse of the relatives, if this was desired. The entire area is uniformly planted with lawn and forms a continuous, even landscape. The cemetery is delimited by various tree plantings.
