Cemal Nebez

Cemal Nebez ( Kurdish : جەمال نەبەز, Cemal Nebez; * December 1, 1933 in Silemani , Iraq ; † December 8, 2018 in Berlin ) was an Iraqi Kurdish linguist , writer, politician and translator.

Life

He completed his school education in Silemani and then went to Baghdad in the 1950s to study physics and mathematics for teaching. From 1955 to 1961 Nebez was a physics and mathematics teacher. For three years he taught in Hewler and Kirkuk and three years in Basra and Baghdad. In 1956 Nebez traveled to Syria and Lebanon , where he met many Kurdish intellectuals. On his trip to Iran in 1957 , he met the Kurdish writer Fath-Ali Haidari Zebajoui in Kermanshah and the cleric and writer Ayatollah Mohammed Mardokh-i Kurdistani (1885-1975) in Sanandaj . In 1962 he went to Europe to continue his studies in pedagogy, Iranology and Islamic studies. From 1963 to 1966 he attended the University of Munich and Würzburg and from 1967 to 1970 the University of Hamburg . From 1970 to 1977 he studied political science, journalism and law at the Free University of Berlin . In 1965 he founded the NUKSE (National Union of the Kurdish Students in Europe) in Munich with Brusk Ibrahim and Latif Ali . In 1985 he founded the Kurdish Academy of Sciences and Arts in Stockholm with many other Kurdish academics, scientists, writers and artists .

In the 1970s and early 1980s, he held the following positions:

  1. 1971–72 lecturer, Free University of Berlin, Ethnological Institute.
  2. 1971–78 lecturer, Free University of Berlin, Institute for Iranian Philology.
  3. 1972–76 Research Associate in Oriental Studies at the German Research Foundation
  4. 1978–82 assistant professor for Islam and Iranian languages ​​at the Free University of Berlin.
  5. 1978–83 researcher of the Persian language and translator at the State Institute for Interpreters and Translators in Berlin and at the Bavarian Ministry of Education in Munich.

Works

Nebez wrote many articles about the Kurdish problem in Arab newspapers from Baghdad. An article from 1954, which was published in the newspaper "Sawt al-Ahali" (Voice of the People), dealt with statements of the then Turkish President Celâl Bayar . He had said on a trip to the USA that there were no other peoples in Turkey apart from Turks. During his teaching time in Kirkuk he wrote the basis for the first Kurdish physics and mathematics book. In 1960 it appeared under the title "Introduction to Mechanics and Properties of Matter" with an extensive glossary of Kurdish physics terms. He also wrote many books on the Kurdish language, in which he advocated that all Kurds should use the Latin script.
