Centaurea redempta is a species of the genus Centaurea .

features

Centaurea redempta is a perennial stem hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 10 to 60, rarely up to 100 centimeters. The lower leaves are pinnate and have many very variable pairs of lateral leaflets. The shell is spherical and has a diameter of 30 to 40 millimeters. The appendage of the bracts is crescent-shaped and black or dark brown. Its end pin is usually 15 to 30 millimeters long, rarely smaller. The flowers are dark purple. The outer flowers are not bright. The fruit is about 4 millimeters in size, the pappus is twice as long.

The flowering period extends from March to June.

The chromosome number is 2n = 20 also for the subspecies Centaurea redempta subsp. cytherea .

Occurrence

Centaurea redempta occurs in the southwest Aegean and in Greece. The species grows in the crevices of limestone cliffs and walls and is mostly found in ravines. The plant is native to Crete at altitudes of 30 to 1200 meters.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Centaurea redempta hero Dr. subsp. redempta : It occurs in Crete.
  • Centaurea redempta subsp. cytherea (Rech. f.) Routsi & T. Georgiadis (Syn .: Centaurea cytherea Rech. f. ): It occurs in Greece.
