features

Centaurea spruneri subsp. guicciardii is a perennial stem hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. The shell is egg-shaped and about 20 millimeters in diameter. The lower leaves are coarse, very lyre-shaped with a few pairs of lateral leaflets and coarse with articulated hairs. The appendage of the bracts is crescent-shaped and yellowish brown. Its spine is 10 to 20 millimeters long. The flowers are pink to purple. The outer flowers are brilliant. The fruit is about 3 millimeters in size and the pappus is three times as long.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

Occurrence

Centaurea spruneri subsp. guicciardii occurs on the Greek mainland, in Albania and in the Aegean Sea . The subspecies grows on cultivated and fallow land as well as on dry ruderal sites. In Crete it can be found at altitudes from 0 to 700 meters.
